BBQ Stuffed Onions

6 large Vidalia onions
2 lbs. ground beef
1 clove garlic, minced
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1-2 cups barbecue sauce

Peel onions and cut in half crosswise, remove centers leaving 2 or 3 layers of onions.  Set aside.  Fine chop onion centers.  Combine chopped onions, ground beef, egg, garlic, salt, pepper and 3/4 cup barbecue sauce.   Mix well and make 6 large meatballs.  Place meatballs into onion halves, mounding it up so that second onion half fits over it.  Place stuffed onions in 12" Dutch Oven.  Bake over medium heat with top coals for 45-60 minutes or until onions are tender and meat is done, basting with remaining barbecue sauce during the last 20 minutes.

Charcoal:  Bake at 350 degrees using directions above:  8 bottom / 17 top coals.
